UniWave Electric
Engineered to comply with local utility (EDD) standards and withstand the harsh ambient environments of the Gulf of Tadjoura.
As the primary logistical gateway for East Africa, Djibouti has embarked on a multi-billion dollar infrastructure modernization scheme, notably expanding the Doraleh Multipurpose Port (DMP), the Port of Ghoubet, and the Djibouti Free Zone (DFZ). These projects require massive electrical upgrades to support high-duty gantry cranes, heavy desalination pumps, and continuous logistics systems. Under the management of Electricité de Djibouti (EDD), the national grid is transitioning from basic thermal energy to advanced integrations, including the 35kV geothermal field explorations around Lake Assal, and high-voltage transmission lines importing power from Ethiopia.
This rapid industrialization demands medium-voltage and high-voltage vacuum contactors that can offer hundreds of thousands of electrical operations without physical degradation. In heavy industries like marine bulk cargo terminals, mineral salt extraction at Lake Assal, and regional railway traction substations, standard air contactors fail prematurely due to high mechanical wear and extreme environment infiltration. Vacuum contactors provide a sealed, arc-free switching solution that keeps critical systems running.
Additionally, Djibouti's ambition to increase its share of solar energy through utility projects like the Grand Bara Solar Power Plant places high demands on DC switching mechanisms. Heavy-duty vacuum contactor relays are crucial for separating capacitor banks and isolating massive solar inverter stations during grid fluctuations. For purchasing agents, sourcing equipment that guarantees both high electrical lifetime (Class E2) and robust mechanical endurance (Class M2) is essential to minimize operational downtime at the port and logistics zones.
Fluctuating grid voltages and extreme industrial induction currents from port crane operations require fast-acting, high-endurance switching. Vacuum contactors provide arc suppression within a fraction of a cycle, shielding sensitive controllers from transient recovery voltage (TRV) spikes.
Sourcing standard off-the-shelf vacuum contactors without considering regional microclimates can lead to disastrous breakdowns. Wenzhou UniWave Electric customizes its vacuum contactors to withstand the local conditions of the Horn of Africa:
The Port of Djibouti, Doraleh, and Ghoubet have extremely high atmospheric salinity levels. We utilize marine-grade, stainless-steel mounting frames, silver-plated copper main terminal pads, and specialized anti-corrosive industrial epoxy coatings. The vacuum interrupter chamber is hermetically sealed to prevent salt-spray tracking and insulation degradation.
Ambient summer temperatures in Djibouti routinely exceed 45°C, rising past 50°C in electrical rooms. UniWave optimizes the thermal limits by utilizing high-temperature H-class insulated electromagnetic coils and implementing a derating design factor. This ensures continuous operation at full load without insulation melting or contact overheating.
The seasonal Khamsin wind carries fine sand and silica dust that quickly coats electrical components. In air-magnetic contactors, dust on the contacts causes arcing and contact welding. Vacuum contactors solve this completely as all load switching takes place in a high-vacuum chamber (10^-4 Pa), isolating the contacts from dust.
In high-dust, high-heat zones, electromagnetic holding coils draw continuous power and generate heat. Wenzhou UniWave's Permanent Magnet Vacuum Contactors only draw current during the millisecond transition phase, dramatically reducing heat output in electrical enclosures.
High-compatibility units designed to directly drop in and replace aged legacy switchgear in local installations.
Selecting the right contactor involves aligning mechanical parameters with local duty cycles. The table below represents our engineering parameters recommended for typical projects in Djibouti:
| Target Application | Recommended Voltage | Contactor Rated Current | Recommended Insulation Type | Control System Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Port Crane Heavy Lifting Motor | 6kV to 12kV AC | 400A to 820A | Permanent Magnet / Vacuum Interrupter | 220V AC with Auxiliary tracking contacts |
| Desalination High-Pressure Pumps | 1.14kV to 6kV AC | 160A to 630A | Tropicalized Sealed Cast Resin Housing | Dual-winding latch system (energy saving) |
| Substation Capacitor Bank Switching | 12kV to 35kV AC | 160A to 400A | Arc-Resistant Metal-Clad Enclosure | Microprocessor-driven sync switcher |
| Telecom Datacenter & Grid Backup | 1000V DC | 150A to 350A | High-Speed DC Magnet Actuator | Low-draw battery level tracking relay |
Crucial Selection Tip: Vacuum contactors are not meant to break short-circuit faults (which is the job of a Vacuum Circuit Breaker - VCB). They are designed for frequent load current switching. Therefore, ensure you pair your vacuum contactors with appropriate High-Voltage HRC Current-Limiting Fuses to provide comprehensive short-circuit protection for the system.
When executing electrical engineering imports for industrial projects in East Africa, compliance verification is the most critical hurdle. Wenzhou UniWave Electric maintains strict international testing certifications to ensure smooth customs clearance and utility approvals:
Our medium and high-voltage vacuum contactors are fully tested and certified under the IEC 60470 standard (High-voltage alternating current contactors and contactor-based motor-starters). This guarantees that our products satisfy the insulation level, temperature rise limit, and short-circuit making capacity required by the grid codes of major African utilities.
Our manufacturing complex in Liushi, Wenzhou leverages the ISO9001 quality control management standard. All components go through computerized automated testing platforms that log contact bounce time, dielectric withstand voltage, and pickup/dropout voltages. SAA, CE, and CB certs are available upon request to satisfy project engineers.
We work directly with major maritime shippers routing from Ningbo/Shanghai directly to the Port of Djibouti. We supply all commercial invoices, packing lists, test certificates, and certificates of origin required for swift clearance under the Djibouti Customs Administration.

Answers to common engineering questions regarding the application, maintenance, and durability of vacuum contactors.
A Vacuum Contactor is designed for repetitive, high-frequency switching under normal load currents (e.g., motor starts, transformer switching), typical of operations like those at Doraleh Port cranes. It possesses high mechanical endurance (up to millions of cycles) but has low short-circuit interrupting capacity. Conversely, a VCB is meant to interrupt short-circuit fault currents but has a lower mechanical endurance (around 10,000 to 20,000 operations).
Permanent magnet actuators rely on magnetic force to hold the contacts closed, rather than continuous energy draw via an electromagnetic coil. This eliminates continuous coil heating, reduces cabinet temperatures, and minimizes the power load on solar batteries and DC backup systems in remote geothermal or off-grid telecommunication sites.
Current chopping occurs when switching off low currents, causing a transient overvoltage due to fast arc extinction. Our vacuum contactors utilize optimized contact materials (such as Copper-Tungsten or Copper-Chromium alloys) to keep chopping currents below 0.5A, minimizing switching overvoltages and protecting motor winding insulation.
Because the switching contacts are sealed inside the vacuum bottle, the contacts themselves require zero maintenance. However, the outer mechanism, auxiliary switches, and busbars should be periodically inspected (every 6 to 12 months) for salt spray tracking and dust accumulation. Cleaning with dry air and checking contact wear indicator markings is highly recommended.
